GOLF COURSES

In 2009 Kenya was awarded

“BEST UNDISCOVERED GOLF DESTINATION” in the world by IAGTO

Thanks to its long days, bright sun and evening showers moistening the courses, Kenya is the perfect place to play golf.

When Europeans first settled in the late 19th century, it was said that every community should have a church, a club and a golf course, although not necessarily in that order.

In 1906, only seven years after the arrival of the East African Railway, in Enkare Nyrobi, in the Maasai region, the first Kenyan golf course was opened, in the area now known as Upper Hill.

The Nairobi Golf Club, which would later become the Royal Nairobi Golf Club, was designed and built by an intrepid group of architects, who, in the following years, built dozens of other golf courses stretching across the lush central highlands of the Great Rift Valley to the coast of the Indian Ocean.

The latest one, the Vipingo Baobab Golf Club, was built in 2009 by David Jones.

The really innovative construction techniques make it the first ranked course in Kenya in the list of the TOP 100 Golf Courses. The dominant position on the Wuma hills, on the coast between Mombasa and Kilifi, makes it a must-see for any golf fan.

Kenya has 42 golf courses; at least eight of them have hosted major tournaments and are considered world class.

A variety of smaller courses provide geographical oddities for connoisseurs: from ''the only uphill course in Kenya" on the slopes of the extinct Menengai volcano in Nakuru, to the Mount Kenya Safari Club, located right on the equator, where a rich variety of wildlife show up on the fairways.

In addition the rich colonial history of Kenya allows you to relive the atmosphere of the times of the legendary characters of Africa. You can wander in the area of Karen Blixen's plantation or next to Lord Baden Powell's house in Nyeri; follow the footsteps of the late, great Seve Ballesteros in Muthaiga or chase the legends of Winston Churchill and Bing Crosby on the slopes of Mount Kenya.

Wherever you go you discover Kenya’s rich and ancient history.

A golfing holiday in Kenya, whichever way you look at it, is too exciting an experience not to be lived and shared.
